Do you have more than one manufacturing facility? Do you want to produce your own nitrogen gas but you’re not sure which location to choose as your first site?
Let’s discuss the factors we consider when working with customers who have multiple industrial facilities and need to identify the best starting place – either for a pilot project to trial nitrogen gas generation, or as the first site in an organization-wide, multi-facility implementation plan.
Generating nitrogen gas on site – on demand and as needed – solves problems and addresses pain points. The most common ones are the main factors to reflect on when choosing your initial location.
1. Where do you spend the most money on nitrogen?
Traditionally, the facility with the highest nitrogen costs is a good place to start.
This is not necessarily the location where consumption is highest. If you’re using cylinder packs, which have a high cost per unit, and consumption is fairly high, a generation system at that location might offer the best ROI.
2. Where do you have the most trouble with nitrogen deliveries?
On-site nitrogen gas generation was born to be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing liquid nitrogen from a delivery service. Consider which facility is the most remote, far from an urban centre, and is therefore subject to premium delivery fees. Or maybe one of your sites is centrally located, but prone to problems accommodating the tanker truck because of a narrow access road that’s frequently blocked. The nitrogen delivery companies are part of a small network, and they often share resources. You may have noticed that your service provider is affected by a supply shortage at another company. Perhaps weather events have affected deliveries too often. No matter the reason, unpredictable and unreliable delivery will result in low levels in your tanks – or even work slowdowns or stoppages – giving you anxiety and costing you money. The facility causing you the most concern is definitely one to consider when starting your switch to on-site nitrogen gas generation.
3. Where will you see the greatest reduction in carbon emissions?
Consider your overall business goals related to sustainability and environmental protection. With on-site nitrogen gas generation, we can reduce or eliminate deliveries at your most remote facility or where the highest volume of nitrogen is consumed, reducing your carbon footprint.
Purity Gas engineers are experts at designing a generation system that is customized and optimized to your unique application. Giving you the appropriate level of purity required for your application, without overdoing it, avoids unnecessary carbon emissions.
Occasionally, we talk to customers about switching activities from higher-emitting energy grids in certain regions to lower-emitting grids. For example, you can produce your own nitrogen gas in a region with a cleaner energy grid, instead of relying on liquid nitrogen produced in a higher-emitting grid.
More about piloting on-site nitrogen gas generation
Some customers want to try the technology at one facility to build knowledge and confidence. To choose a good location for a pilot project, we look for a small-scale representation of your overall operations. You might test a nitrogen gas generation system in a single laser-cutting facility, not because of the reasons mentioned above, but because it’s the truest example of how your business operates now and in the future.
Developing the plan together
In any of these cases, you’re not alone. Purity Gas will work with you to gather the data and information you need to make an informed decision. You can count on a thorough multi-facility feasibility analysis, as well as support from technically trained sales people and project engineers, giving you the confidence to proceed down your chosen path.
And whether you’re embarking on a pilot setup, or installing the first system in a planned series, you’ll have the chance to experience how the system works in your environment and provide feedback to influence our next iteration.
You should also know that Purity Gas systems are modular and scalable. We can add to systems and move them. Customers may see cost savings if we design the initial system with an intended expansion plan in mind.
